General Workshop Topics
An Introduction to Home Education:
Examines the broad range of concerns involved in getting
started in home education. Including: a brief history of
education in America; the legality of home education; an
overview of curriculum choices; and a discussion of the
socialization issue.
Fundamentals of Education: Teaching
from a Christian Worldview. Focuses on the three
elements of education - Philosophy, Curriculum, and Methods,
and explains how to develop a truly Christian approach to
teaching our children.
Is there a Father in the House?:
Provides a practical and encouraging approach to a father’s
involvement in home education. Includes a discussion of the
father’s relationship to his wife as teacher and his
children as students and presents specific, unique areas
where dads can take a leadership role.
Developing a Christian Philosophy
of Education: Explains why most “Christian education” is
just “secular education” with prayer and bible study added.
Shows how to develop a distinctly Christian approach to
education which will determine the direction and outcome of
the home education experience.
Home Education for the long haul:
Discusses the advantages of long term home education and
shows how to deal with the obstacles that can arise along
the way.
Teaching Kids Right from Wrong: Many
Christian parents assume that their children will learn the
difference between right and wrong simply by being in the home
and absorbing the parent's values. While this approach may be
adequate for general lifestyle and behavior values, it does not
equip your children to make correct choices covering a broader
range of issues. This workshop will discuss the foundation for
making moral choices, examine how God's law‑word provides the
principles for making decisions which goes beyond rules and
regulations, and how these principles relate to real life issues
such as politics, economics, emotions and social relationships.
Kicking and Screaming: The Reluctant
Home-school Father: Dads. Imagine this scenario: Mom reads
or hears about home education and realizes that this is exactly
what the kids need and what her heart really wants; she shares
this conviction with dad and, after much cajoling and pleading,
he agrees; however, in the back of his mind, he keeps a safe
distance from this “experiment” in case it fails. Sound
familiar? Get a fathers perspective on why home education is the
right decision and why it requires more than just your tacit
approval. Come prepared to have your education assumptions
challenged.
Leadership Topics
A Christian Perspective on Leadership:
Based on Joshua’s succession as leader of Israel after Moses’
death, this session identifies the biblical principles of
leadership and shows how leaders are part of God’s plan for
every aspect of his kingdom, including home education.
Projecting a Professional Image:
Home school leaders have a special role and responsibility which
distinguishes them from home schoolers in general. More than
just “dressing for success,” learn how to present an image and
fulfill the leadership role in a way that benefits and enhances
the home school movement and glorifies God.
Effective Leadership: Learn the key
components of being an “effective” leader. Understand the
importance of Mission and Vision to the success of your home
school organization.
The Gift of Leadership: See how
Godly leadership is a gift; uniquely adapted to and expressed
through the individual leader and fitted for the specific needs
and purposes of the organization
Leading from a Christian Worldview
“Having” a worldview is a lot like the
weather – everybody talks about it but nobody does anything
about it. We will look at three fundamental issues of leadership
and see how they should be impacted by a Christian worldview:
Who’s in charge; who’s responsible; what’s it all about?
